According to the main developer of VLC for iOS, Felix Kühne, the program is a full-fledged VLC with the features of tvOS. Like VLC for iOS, The player supports almost all media file formats.

You can make a list of links to pages, from which the content will be played, and manage it through a web interface. To ensure quick access to playable videos, their cache will be stored on Apple TV.
The remote playback feature supports such formats, like hls, Smooth, RTSP, HTTP and FTP. Currently, developers are preparing a major media player update, which will allow you to play content from popular cloud services Dropbox, OneDrive and Box. AC3 audio format not currently supported.
