How to scan documents on Mac using iPhone instead of scanner

In the application View

If you just need to scan a text document and save it, eg, to pdf, PNG or JPG on Mac for later processing or storage, then the ideal option is to use the standard macOS application View.

  1. Open the View or Notes application.
  2. Select File → Import from iPhone or iPad in the menu bar.
  3. Click «Scan documents» taking into account the device you are using.
  4. Make sure, that your device is unlocked. You should see an open scan tool on it, which will allow you to make a digital copy of the document.
  5. If the upper right corner is set to Auto, then the document will be scanned automatically when the entire document enters the camera. If you want to run a scan yourself, select the option Manually (click on Auto to change).
  6. After, how the picture was taken, you can set border angles, if necessary. Click «Leave», and then «Save».

The scanned document opens in the application «View» on your mac. If necessary, use the Layout tool to edit the document.

In the Notes application

If it’s more convenient for you to store scan files in the Notes application, then instead of View, you can use the standard Notes application.

  1. Open an existing note or create a new one.
  2. Select File → Paste from iPhone or iPad into the menu bar, or click «Media» on the toolbar of an open note. Or you can right-click in the body of the note and select the image import in the context menu.
  3. Select «Scan documents» taking into account the device you are using.
  4. Make sure, that your device is unlocked. You should see an open scan tool on it, which will allow you to make a digital copy of the document.
  5. After, how the picture was taken, you can set border angles, if necessary. Click «Leave», and then «Save».

The scanned document appears in your application note «Notes» on your mac.

Note. To use this feature, mac must have MacOS Mojave or later installed.

How to find a scanned document in Notes

If you added a note to the application from your iPhone or iPad and want to find it on your Mac, it’s easy to do. Open app «Notes» and do the following:

  1. In the menu bar, click View → Show attachment browser either click «Investments» on the application toolbar.
  2. Select «Scans».
  3. When you find the scanned image, you can double click on it, to open it in the editing window, or right-click and select «Show in note», «Open file attachment» (similar to double clicking on it) or «Quick view of the attached file», whichever, what you need to do.

You can also use the search tool in «Notes», to find a scanned document by its name.

Editing a scanned document

To use the editing tools in the application «View», click the Layout button (it shows a pencil). Here, in addition to cropping and the possibility of applying text and graphic elements to images, it is possible to insert captions and text marks.

To use the editing tools in the application «Notes», double click on the image. Here you can crop, rotation or apply certain filters.

If other markup tools are needed, click on the small down arrow button/daws in the upper right corner and select «Markup». The document opens in the markup tool.
