The notification center in macOS. How to invoke, configure and optimize

How to enable the function «Do not disturb»?

Surely many iPhone and iPad owners use the feature «Do not disturb» in manual or automatic mode. Did you know, that the same function is present in macOS?

For, to activate it, just hold the key ⌥Option (Alt) and click on the Notification Center icon, located in the upper right corner of the menu bar. The icon will immediately fade, and opening the Notification Center, you will see an activated toggle mode «Do not disturb», which will automatically turn off the next day. No more notifications will disturb you.

How to quickly open the Notification Center

Open System Preferences… → Mission Control and click on the button «Active angles». Next, select a comfortable angle, hold down any key combination on the keyboard (eg, ⇧ + ⌘) and add a menu item to it «Notification Center».

Add widgets

We delay pop-up notifications

If you have configured to display some notifications in the format of banners, then surely more than once caught themselves thinking, that they are already hiding very quickly. You can change the banner display time, using the services of the Terminal.

To make banner display time, eg, 15 seconds, enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.notificationcenterui bannerTime 15

In the same way, you can individually change the number of seconds.

To restore the default settings, enter the following commands:

defaults delete com.apple.notificationcenterui bannerTime

Create your own notifications

Pop-up banners of the Notification Center are pumped cool with the help of a special utility, loaded into the macOS system by the following command activated in the Terminal:

sudo gem install terminal-notifier
